Recessed Lighting Installation: How to Install Recessed Lights?

Installing LED downlights or recessed lights is a great way to create beautiful, illuminating spaces in your home. The following is the step by step explanation of how to install recessed lights:

  1. Begin by turning off the circuit breaker for the circuit you'll be working on. Then, using a non-contact voltage tester, verify that the power is turned off.

(Remember safety comes first)

  1. If you have a switch that controls an outlet, utilize it to control the recessed lights. Locate the outlet and rewire it for constant power, as well as the wire coming from the switch. Remove the outlet and replace it with a new one if the copper tabs between the terminals are broken. Wire nuts are used to cap and secure electrical connections. Then remove the electrical box from the wall.

  1. You'll need to install a switch if there isn't one already. Use a keyhole saw to cut off the drywall at a convenient spot near the door for an outlet. Locate a nearby outlet where you can connect a wire to the switch. Drill through the studs with the flexible drill bit and run the wire from the switch locations to the outlet. Remove the wires from the outlet if necessary and tie them to the new line with short jumper wires. Wire strippers are used to strip the wire’s ends, lineman's pliers are used to twist them together, and wire nuts are used to cap them. Strip the jumper wires' other ends and connect them to the outlet.

  1. Look up into the wall cavity at the switch location using a small mirror to ensure there are no pipes, wires, or other obstructions. Then, drill a hole through the top plate using the flexible drill bit.

  1. Drill holes for LED Recessed lights placements using the dust shroud and hole saw attached to the drill.

  1. Bring the fish tape up from the switch, through the top plate, into the ceiling, and to the nearest light. Next, connect the fish tape to a wire and drag it back through the wall to the switch. Follow a similar method to run wires from one lamp to the next.

  1. Strip the ends of each wire and remove the sheathing from each light placement. At each light, make the electrical connections within the junction boxes and secure the box to the ceiling structure. Then, install the lights by plugging them into the junction boxes.

  1. Return to the switch and run the wires through the electrical box before installing it. Remove the jackets from the cables and secure them to the dimmer switch with the wire strippers. Install the cover plate and connect the switch to the electrical box.

  2. Check that the lights and dimmer switch are working properly after resetting the breaker.
